Traditional Hakka Dishes
Plum Village Restaurant may be the only local Hakka restaurant. There you can eat the representative dishes of the seven districts and counties of Meizhou. In addition to sticking to the classic taste of Hakka cuisine, the founder also teaches and preserves Hakka food culture by writing recipes and offering cooking classes.

Our Story
Plum Village Restaurant
The local Hakka restaurant, Plum Village Restaurant, has the "Four Kings": Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables, Hakka Yam Abacus, Stuffed Tofu and Salted Chicken. These classic Hakka dishes have a group of loyal diners and must be ordered every time they go to the restaurant.
At Plum Village Restaurant, you can eat the representative delicacies of the seven districts and counties of Meizhou: Steam Radish balls, Wuhua stuffed tofu, Jiaoling pickled wine lees and soup, Pingyuan braised pork belly with preserved vegetables, Xingyu braised pork, Dapu abacus, Fengshunchun dishes, some are not on the menu, must be reserved.
The most familiar Hakka dish is Hakka yam abacus. Mr Lai said that this is because most of the local Hakka people are from Dapu County, Guangdong Province, and abacus is a well-known traditional snack in Dapu County. His hometown is in Meixian, and famous with radish balls. Since there are few Hakka people in Meixian, this hometown dish is rarely seen. On the other hand, in Indonesia and Hong Kong, due to the large number of Hakka people in Meixian County, radish balls are generally popular there.
Started in 1983, Plum Village is the oldest Hakka restaurant in Singapore. It has been in its Jalan Leban location ever since, and looks the same as it did before.
Owner Lai Fak Nian, 76, learned the cuisine in the 70s from a Hakka chef from Hong Kong. Today, he sticks to the recipes, but has simplified the kitchen processes. Last year, his son Jimmy quit his accounting job to join him. "But it's too early for me to take over as I haven't learned everything," says the 48-year-old.
The restaurant has a strong following. "We usually see three generations eating together, so it would be a pity to close this place down," says the younger Lai, who acknowledges that the business is getting tougher because of a manpower crunch and rising costs. "It's hard to keep the place running," he says, adding that his teenage daughter sometimes helps out. "In a way, the restaurant is also a legacy to pass down to her."
His father has no intention of retiring anyway, and wants to educate the younger generation about Hakka food culture. "It's my dad's mission to promote Hakka heritage, so I've given up trying to get him to retire," says Lai with a laugh. His father still does the cooking from scratch whenever his chefs return to China on vacation, tirelessly prepping in the kitchen from early in the morning.
For Chinese New Year, Plum Village will roll out classics such as traditional Hakka pen cai filled with duck, chicken, pig's trotter, yong tau fu and more. Menu highlights include the iconic suan pan zi or abacus seeds made with yam, as well as the more uncommon radish-and-minced pork dumplings.
To modernise the business, Lai is beefing up Plum Village website, so it can also take online orders. To be launched after Chinese New Year, the refreshed website will enable customers to place their orders online and pick up their orders at the restaurant.
The website will also be a source of information on Hakka culture. "My father used to conduct cooking classes, where he would share the history of the food. So it would be good if he continued to do that, at the same time, the information online will get more people interested in our heritage.
Chef
Lai Fak Nian
Mr Lai (75 years old) founded Plum Village Restaurant in 1983. With a sense of mission to Hakka culture, he hopes that Hakka dishes can be carried forward locally.
Talking about the challenges of running an old restaurant, Mr Lai said it is not easy to find the right chef. There are many Cantonese restaurants and seafood restaurants in the local area. Many chefs consider that if they learn Hakka cuisine, their future development will be limited, so it is difficult for the industry to train suitable Hakka chefs.
During the epidemic, the F&B industry was greatly impacted, and many old restaurants closed due to this. Mr Lai is glad that the Plum Village Restaurant is his own property and does not have to bear the pressure of rent, so he has to keep the restaurant going no matter what, "If I take away this restaurant, I will not be able to keep my own culture, and I will be very sad. Fortunately, we have passed the get through it."

Traditional Hakka food, very good taste. I will recommend, the chicken, 扣肉 and 酿豆腐。The taste very authentic 👍. In the downside, service was not as good. You cannot have too much variance in your order. They cannot cope with that, just only the set will be the best for them. Lastly it gets crowded during peak hours. Also difficult to find parking.

19/10/2022An old school Hakka food restaurant, the Hakka food are authentic, recommend their salty chicken, 梅菜扣肉, 酿豆腐. Their services also pretty old school, called multi times to make reservations and they finally picked up and gave me a mobile number to WhatsApp them, and took them many days to confirm the reservations. And seem like they can only take set meal order, took them forever to add dishes.

19/10/2022A quaint-looking diner that has a really nice traditional ambience. Decently priced. The braised pork was my favourite among the ordered dishes, hakka noodles were quite disappointing however. Yam abascus was good.

A very traditional looking shop and my friend commented she felt like shes back home in China. The 梅菜扣肉was really good. Not overly seasoned and jus right with rice. Love the salted chicken, simple but yet can taste the original taste of the dish. The chilli is really good as some reviewers have commented. 算盘子is very unique.. unlike the commercial selling ones that's very chewy, this is slightly more towards sour and also very powdery full of yummy yam rather than flour.

02/09/2022Authentic Hakka dishes served at very reasonable prices. Food is not too salty, unlike many other restaurants. 猪肚 in the 猪肚汤 is super soft. 梅菜扣肉 is soft, fragrant, and you can savour the original taste of 梅菜. 算盘子 is soft and fragrant and not the rubbery kind. Only downside is very hard to find parking nearby.
